Danse
Macabre
A VR experience co-directed byMerel Langstraat and Erika Laverman
Danse Macabre is a virtual reality experience inspired by 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane.
Built in Unreal Engine and Blender, a raw and unsettling meditation on obsession, identity, and the fragile boundary between beauty and destruction.
At the center of the experience is a ballerina who lives to dance, so much so that she is willing to die for it. As the viewer, you are placed in an intimate, unflinching position: not just to observe her unraveling, but to be complicit in it.
This project explores the tension between passion and self-destruction, control and surrender. Designed for VR, it uses spatial immersion and atmospheric intensity to challenge how we emotionally engage with digital bodies and performance.
Stylistically minimalist yet emotionally heavy, Danse Macabre invites you to witness what it means to fall apart, beautifully.

Hatch opens
Stark light
A table two chairs and no windows
Here am I
and there is my body
dancing on glass
In accident time where there are no accidents
You have no choice
the choice comes after
Cut out my tongue
tear out my hair
cut off my limbs
but leave me my love
I would rather have lost my legs
pulled out my teeth
gouged out my eyes
than lost my love
